PETITION: Keep the Confederate Flag atop the Capital dome.

Wed, 1 Sep 1999

Governor Hodges: Years of scurrilous defamation, skewed history, baseless accusations, and unsubstantiated facts, liberally daubed on the history and symbols of Southern heritage by the media and Hollywood, have forever tarnished the otherwise noble grandeur which was the Confederate States of America. As a gesture of our defiance to this deconstruction of our heritage, the Southern people of South Carolina elected to raise our battle flag atop the Capital dome to be viewed as a sign that our pride in our history and culture was still alive and healthy. Now, hate-filled groups, who thrill and thrive at destroying the cultural integrity and honor of our beloved South and her symbols, are vowing to remove our battle flag from atop the dome. This outrage must not be appeased. There is no historical basis for doing so, nor will this gesture culminate in any worthwhile peace. The people of South Carolina - your constituents - have repeatedly stated that they DO NOT want this flag taken down. The election result of the former governor who disregarded the will of the people should still be clear in your mind. Are you looking for a repeat' We respectfully demand you stand firm against the baseless diatribe of agenda-bound hate groups who call for the flag to be removed.
