31st Iowa Volunteer Infantry Regiment

Company D

Ancestors

Stephens, Henry - My ggrandfather enlisted in LaPorte City Iowa on August 8, 1862. He was sworn in at Davenport Iowa September 26, 1862. He was on the muster-out roll at Louisville Kentucky June 27, 1865. His name on his death certificate is spelled Henry Stephens, but on his military papers, it is Stevens. He signed by mark, so I am assuming he may have been able to read or write. Death certificate says he was born in New Berlin, Wisconsin, but no birth records, so I've run into a brick wall. I have some military papers, but would like to know if there is photos of his company, etc. Thanks, Linda Nelson, at lindanel@open.org

He died in Helena, Arkansas on April 19, 1863 of Typhoid, leaving behind two children and a wife. Some time later a man named Joseph B. Jacobs became the children's guardian. I am looking for information, pictures, letters, etc. that pertain to either George C. Case or Joseph B. Jacobs. Thanks, M. Ahrens AhrensMR1JH2@compuserve.com
