NEW JERSEY INFANTRY
1st New Jersey Light Artillery

Ancestors
McChesney, Leander - I recently learned that my great grandfather
served with the above light artillery battery. He served from September
3, 1861 to June 16, 1865. He joined as a private and was mustered out as
a second lieutenant. I am looking for any information possible about his
regiment, battles they participated in, etc. Thank you. Dan Diepenbrock

5th New Jersey Regiment
Company C
Ancestors
Buck, Dennis M., Sergeant - I have been tryng to obtain some
information on my g-g-grandfather, Sgt Dennis M. Buck. The only information
I have at present is that he enlisted in the Union Army 19, Aug. 1861,
as Private, Company C, 5th NJ Infantry. Other information has him enlisting
in Troop D, 2d US Cavalry 25, Oct. 1862, in Alexandria, VA. This information
may or may not be accurate. I have a listing of battles that he was suppose
to have engaged in. Thank you, Karl E. Gansberg, kegan@dc.jones.com.

38th New Jersey Regiment
Company E
Ancestors
Johnson, Jacob, H., Sr. - I have discharge papers for my great grandfather,
Jacob H. Johnson,Sr., but it says he "enlisted from Hunterdon Co.,
NJ Sept. 21, 1864 and was mustered into the US service at Trenton, NJ as
a private to serve one year or during war in Company E 38th Regiment NJ
Volunteer Infantry under Capt. William W. Abbott and Colonel William J.
Sewell." There are several words I cannot read, letters that don't
make sense such as "The regiment was assigned to a Brerissional Brigade(?).
--- was assigned to Garrison Duty at Fort Powhatan on the James River.
It took a part with the army before Petersburg which resulted in the capture
of Petersburg --- 2, 1865. Appomattix ----------Rebel-------surrender with
his army on --- 1965 was wounded at Fort Pocahontas and was shot in right------was
in field hospital----months and was finally honoably discharged June 30,
1865 at City Point, VA by reason of close of war." The original discharge
certificate is quite large. Am interested in any info. on this regiment.
