SOUTH CAROLINA INFANTRY REGIMENTS

22nd South Carolina Infantry Regiment

Company ?

Ancestors

  • Knopf, Abraham - I'm working on GGGfather Abraham Knopf, a sutler in Evans Brigade and mustered into the 22nd South Carolina during December, 1863. He was captured at Bermuda Hundred on June 2nd, 1864, in (we think) the same skirmish that Colonel Olin Dantzler was killed. He was a P.O.W. at Point Lookout, Maryland until exchanged, February, 1865. From what I know, I'm lucky he was captured or he would have soon found himself at the Crater, where most of the 22nd perished. This about all we know, and there seems to be little written on the 22nd, other than "Shanks" Evans lacking consistent leadership, and later (I think) was relieved of command. Any info. or pointers appreciated. Again, great website, and am truly looking forward to a copy of your book. Mark Knopf, Roanoke, Va. (J.A. Early Country), Mark Knopf, knoroa@rbnet.com

    SOUTH CAROLINA CAVALRY UNITS

    3rd South Carolina Cavalry Regiment

    Company A

    Ancestors

  • Thomas, Joseph William - Ron, my gggrandfather was Joseph William Thomas, serving in Co. A, 3rd Regiment of the SC Cavalry. He enlisted in 1862 at age 17 and remained in service until surrender. He was born in 1845 and died in 1917. Joseph married Cynthia Crews in 1865 and had 12 children. I have the widow's pension record (1919) and am interested in the regimental history of his unit. Thank you. Marjorie Kwiatkowski at Kwiat4@worldnet.att .net
