5th Texas Infantry Regiment

Company H

Ancestors

Steel, George Washington. Our 2nd great grandfather, George Washington Steel, joined the 5th Regiment, Co. H of the Texas Infantry at Cold Springs, Polk County, Texas, August 20, 1861. At that time he was living in Cherokee County Texas. The captain of this regiment was John S. Cleveland. In October and November the muster rolls from National Archives show him as sick with disease in Gibson Hospital in Richmond, Virginia. He died in December 1861. The Confederate States paid $20.00 for a coffin and hearse for G. W. and James B. Ross, both of 5th Texas. They are supposedly buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Richmond. I have never been able to bring up anything on my computer for the 5th Texas Infantry. Is there any available information on this company. Would he have enlisted in a local "company" and then combined with this infantry? I'm sure I am not using the correct terms but hope you understand my question. Thanks for any help. Its 1st Lieutenant was Marsh Glenn. I believe he is my husband's gggrandfather, but can find no records of what happened to him or the 2nd Texas Calvary. 4th Texas Cavalry Regiment

Company A

Ancestors - Williams, Thomas Wilbur, Pvt. - In a recent dive into my family history I came upon a relative of mine who served in the Civil War. Alas I can find little of his units history or of any thing else of the matter concerning him. Here is what I have so far. "The records show that Thomas Wilbur Williams, private, Company K "Ford’s Company", "Green’s Regiment", 4th Texas Cavalry, Confederate States Army, enlisted March 5, 1863. The last company roll on file dated February 29, 1864 reports him present. No later record showing him present in the military has been found to date. Both Thomas (Pension No. 14893) and his second wife Helen (Pension No. 17458) , filed for pension in 1909 and 1910. Both of their pension records can be found in the Texas State Library and Archives Commission located in Austin."This is what I have in my revision of one part of my families history. Can you please help me in finding out my dear ancestors units history? I would be forever in your debt. Sincerest Regards, Konrad Dean Williams Chicxulub1@aol.com
